That river of music.

I’ve probably mentioned that the Son Unit is home for the holidays. Though I bought him a Pocket Pod for Christmas, he’s opted to commandeer the Vox VT30, which means we hear his practicing. A lot. Lately he’s paddled against the current, going upstream in the river of music to visit the 70s and 80s. There he found lots of Clapton, which he now appreciates, but the object of his OCD at the moment is “Sultans of Swing.” (I remember the first time I heard it, working as a tiny-town newspaper reporter in TN. Me and another guitarist, who worked the presses, stopped everything to listen – a clean strat and fleet fingers!)

So now, when I listen to my son learning it, I appreciate the musical river, influence on influence, morphing, evolving, paying homage, reinventing, learning.

It must be a cool kind of feeling for the influencers, knowing kids are deconstructing the territory they brought to our ears, to have fans that won’t be bothered by no steeeekin generational boundaries.

Here’s what it sounded like while I had these vague thoughts. I had to hide in the kitchen with the portable recorder. It’s sounding better today.
